AIRD, AI & Biomaterials in Luxury RTW

Produced for the ESMOD Business Marathon, a competition brief set by Chanel. AIRD was the winning entry.

The brief asked how an ultra-luxury fashion brand can innovatively integrate AI and digital into its creative process while respecting and emphasising the house codes: heritage, craftsmanship, rarity, experience and discretion. AIRD, Artificial Intelligence Research Development, answered it by putting AI behind the fabric rather than in front of the customer.

01

Position

Three market pressures framed the opportunity: rising production costs, tightening sustainability regulation and intense competition. The response was to shift the house from seasonal trend toward timeless, wellness-oriented products that are patented, which justifies the price rather than merely asserting it.

AIRD proposed a new category, scientific ready-to-wear. AI sits across six stages of production, from data aggregation and molecular discovery through generative design, predictive bio-integration, production optimisation and global performance analysis, so the technology accelerates the craft instead of replacing it.

The four lines

Each line paired a human problem with a material solution. Sleep took micro-encapsulated antioxidants in a silk sleepwear range, with a slow diffusion on friction and heat. Heat used CRISPR gene-edited hemp with heightened natural UV protection, worked into outerwear. Cold used biocompatible polymers carrying living probiotic cultures in innerwear. Stress used tension variation across the knit to support the body at specific points, applied to activewear.

Every line carried a 2025 proposition and a 2030 horizon, from adaptive ingredient release and in-garment sleep-stage detection to AI micro-climate management and compression recalibrated to a workout.

Why it holds

The concept was built to satisfy the house codes rather than work around them. Heritage is served by mixing timeless craftsmanship with new science. Rarity is served by patents. Experience becomes proactive, discreet wellness woven into the fabric itself rather than announced on a label. Discretion is preserved because the intelligence is invisible to everyone except the person wearing it.
